Background of the Study

Mobile phone messaging has emerged as a powerful tool for improving health awareness, particularly in regions with limited access to other forms of mass media. In Kebbi State, where maternal health challenges persist, mobile phone messaging programs have been implemented to disseminate crucial information on maternal health, antenatal care, safe delivery practices, and postnatal care. The use of mobile phone technology allows for the rapid and direct distribution of information, tailored to the needs of individual recipients. As mobile phones become more widespread even in rural areas, the potential of this medium to bridge the information gap regarding maternal health becomes increasingly important. This study seeks to appraise the effectiveness of mobile phone messaging in improving maternal health awareness in Kebbi State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of health services, maternal health outcomes in Kebbi State remain suboptimal, with high maternal mortality rates and low utilization of antenatal care services. One of the contributing factors to this is the lack of awareness about the importance of timely medical interventions during pregnancy. Mobile phone messaging is a potential solution to address this issue, but its effectiveness in improving maternal health awareness in the context of Kebbi State has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study will examine how mobile phone messaging programs influence maternal health knowledge and health-seeking behavior in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of mobile phone messaging in improving maternal health awareness in Kebbi State.
  2. To determine the impact of mobile phone messaging on maternal health knowledge, including antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal practices.
  3. To explore the challenges and opportunities of using mobile phone messaging as a tool for improving maternal health outcomes in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is mobile phone messaging in improving maternal health awareness in Kebbi State?
  2. What impact does mobile phone messaging have on maternal health knowledge and practices in Kebbi State?
  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in utilizing mobile phone messaging to improve maternal health outcomes in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Mobile phone messaging significantly improves maternal health awareness in Kebbi State.
  2. Maternal health knowledge and practices in Kebbi State are positively influenced by mobile phone messaging programs.
  3. The use of mobile phone messaging is associated with increased utilization of maternal health services in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on women of reproductive age in Kebbi State who have access to mobile phones and have participated in mobile messaging programs. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in isolating the effect of mobile messaging from other interventions.

Definitions of Terms
